Step Four: Set up a Home Office

Your home office does not have to fancy. It does not even have to be fancy. But you do need a space where you can work each day and complete assignments on time. Your home office needs:

 

1) A desk. It can be pretty basic, but you do need a surface to work on.

 

2) A computer. You don’t need a high-end computer. A system with a high-speed Internet connection, Word software, and Windows will get you started.

 

3) A telephone. If you can get a separate phone for your new writing business, that’s great. Otherwise, make sure that your phone is always answered in a professional way and that any answering service you have has a professional-sounding outgoing message.

 

4) Access to a fax. You may have access to a fax machine at your local copy center. That may be all you need – just make sure you can accept faxes at your copy center and have their fax number handy in case editors or clients ask you for it. You can also have your own office fax or even install fax software on your computer.

 

5) A planner or calendar. You want some sort of visual system that can help you keep track of deadlines.

 

6) A filing system. You want a space where you can keep paperwork, receipts, and research. This can be as simple as a divided box with space for your papers.
