Step Three: Craft a Letter of Introduction
Letters of introduction are very handy documents to have in your writing arsenal. In a pinch, they can be tweaked into resume cover letters for job applications or even into queries. They can be sent as-is to companies, publications, and clients you are interested in working with.
Letters of introduction are wonderful because they are not as restrictive as query letters. If an editor does not like the idea you pitch in a query letter, they simply reject your query letter. Since letters of introduction are more open-ended, they encourage editors to get in touch with you about any assignments they may have. Letters of introduction are also great because they allow you to go after hidden job markets.
You can send letters of introduction to many places:
1) Publications, including regional and national magazines, newspapers, and trade publications. Editors at these places often work with a regular pool of freelancers, and sending a letter of introduction shows that you are willing to join that group.
2) Companies you are interested in working for. Is there a publishing house you would like to work for, or a web design firm you think you could create great content for? Send off a letter of introduction. It’s far better than waiting for job openings to be posted.
3) Clients you are interested in working for. Did a new small company just open up in your town? Is there a public figure in your area who you think might need writing services? Send a quick letter of instruction to let potential clients know about your writing services.
When writing letters of introduction, keep it short and professional. Start off by telling your potential clients who you are. Include your experience and any clips. Then, briefly detail what you are interested in – working on freelance assignments, for example. Include a resume, clips, and a URL link to your professional web site and you are well on your way.
