Taking the First Step to Writing from Home: Deciding What to Write

Published by writefromhome at 7:02 pm under Uncategorized Edit This

If you want to launch your career as a writer from home, you first need to figure out what it is you want to write. There are many, many writing jobs you can take on from home:

*Technical writing

*Copy writing

*Article writing

*Writing books

*Creative writing

*Business writing

*Copy editing and editing jobs

*Review writing

This blog will be covering these areas of writing and many more in the coming weeks and months. For now, though, figure out your writing plans. Do you want to make a serious income from writing at home, or is money not as important to you as writing itself? Is there a type of writing you are especially interested in? Is there a type of writing that you have already perfected (maybe through a previous or current job)? Brainstorm all your skills and qualifications as well as all your interests.

Next, brainstorm the subjects you are knowledgeable about. What could you write about? If you were going to write articles or books, what subjects do you already know about? What did you study in school? What did you learn on the job or in real life? When your friends and family come to you for advice, what do they ask you about?  The answers to all these questions are important clues when it comes time to decide what you will be writing.

That’s the only assignment for today. Just determine what you could and can write. At the beginning, you may be writing many types of things, especially if you want to make a steady income as a writer. You may eventually want to specialize in a specific subject or type of writing in order to command higher rates. When you are just trying to break in, though, it pays to have lots of options open to you. You never know which door will open for you.

In the meantime, here is a wonderful video from YouTube that gives even more insight into the writing life:
