What Does it Mean to Write from Home, Anyway?

Published by writefromhome at 12:53 pm under Uncategorized Edit This

I’m sure you’ve seen the ads. Click around a few online writing websites and you will see plenty of ads promising you that you can make hundreds of thousands of dollars a year writing from home. All you have to do is to send in your hard-earned money for a course, or an ebook, or a program that will show you the way. Or maybe you have seen those other ads – the ones that promise that you can write a whole book in just a few days and easily score a publishing contract. All you have to do is to send in your hard-earned money. Or maybe you have to sign up for a program that lets you fill out forms.

It all sounds great, until you read an interview with a writer who makes writing sound like the hardest job in the world. What’s really going on?

Writers who work from home are often either freelancers or telecommuting staff writers. Telecommuting staff writers work for one company and get company benefits, but they work from home some or all the time. Freelance writers work as free agents, essentially, often without benefits but with more freedom to take on various projects and clients.

Writers who write from home work on many different types of projects – from abstracts and books to business copy and white papers. Some do make hundreds of thousands of dollars a year – or even more – while others make very little. You don’t have to send away for an expensive “how to” program to learn how to start your own writing career at home, though. Stick around and you will find on this blog all the resources, tools, and facts you need to get started in your career at home – all for free.
